What StoryCapture keeps, and where it goes
StoryCapture is a desktop app that records demo videos of websites, an MCP server inside it that AI clients can drive, and a web app for sharing the videos. Your stories and recordings stay on your computer until you publish one.

On your computer
Projects, .story scripts, recordings, exports and app settings are files on your computer. The app does not send them anywhere unless you upload a video. Its logs and crash diagnostics stay on your computer too, and never include story content or recordings.
Secrets a story uses (a demo account's password, an API key) are stored encrypted with your operating system's keychain and are masked in recordings.
The MCP server and AI clients
The MCP server is off until you turn it on in Settings → Integrations. It listens only on your computer and answers only clients that send its token. When an AI client you connected (such as Claude) calls its tools, the client receives what the tool returns: your story text, check results, and screenshots or frames of the pages and videos you are working on. What the AI client does with that data is governed by that client's own privacy policy.
Recording, uploading and changing which version of a video plays ask you in the app first, unless you turn on Full access in Settings → Integrations.
Services you choose to use
- Narration and AI features. If you add your own ElevenLabs, Anthropic or OpenAI key, the text you ask the app to voice or process is sent to that provider under your account and its terms.
- The websites you record. The app's browser visits the pages your story names, like any browser would.
The StoryCapture web app
- Your account. Signing in with Google or GitHub gives us your name, email address and avatar. We keep them while you have an account.
- Videos you upload. The video file, its poster, subtitles, transcript, chapters and, if you choose to show it, the story script are stored in Cloudflare R2 and our database (hosted with Vercel), and shown to anyone with the video's link. Earlier versions of a video stay until you delete them.
- Watch analytics. When someone watches a shared video we record playback events (play, pause, seek, the scene reached, how far they watched) with a random session id kept in a cookie and the viewer's country, looked up from the IP address, which is not stored. Raw events are kept for 90 days; daily totals after that.
- Email. Workspace invitations are sent through Resend.
We do not sell personal data or use it for advertising.
Deleting your data
Delete a project from the desktop app, or its folder, to remove it from your computer. Delete a video or one of its versions on its page in the web app to remove it from storage. To delete your account and everything in it, write to hello@storycapture.dev.
